A double holiday: the Annunciation of the Virgin and Greece's national day, with parades.
On 25 March Greece celebrates both the Annunciation and the start of the War of Independence in 1821. Every town has a school and military parade in the morning, and churches dedicated to the Annunciation hold their feast. Traditionally people eat fried salted cod with garlic sauce, even though it is Lent.
In Heraklion the parade goes through the centre, and Paleochora is one of the places with a well-known church feast.
