On 8 November 1866, the defenders of Arkadi monastery blew up the powder store rather than surrender to the Ottoman army. The anniversary, on the feast of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, is one of the most important days in Crete: a memorial service at the monastery, a re-enactment and ceremonies in Rethymno, which treats 7 to 9 November as its main festival.

The feast of the Taxiarches is also a big panigiri in villages with churches of the Archangels, such as Lakkoi in the hills south of Chania.
