Memorial services, parades and re-enactments marking the German airborne invasion of May 1941.
On 20 May 1941, German paratroopers landed on Crete, starting a fierce ten-day battle in which Greek and Allied soldiers and Cretan civilians fought side by side. Every year the island remembers with ceremonies at the war cemeteries, parades, exhibitions, re-enactments and, at Maleme, paratrooper demonstrations. Veterans' families from Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Germany often attend.
The main events take place around Chania: at the Maleme airfield and cemetery, in Galatas, at the Souda Bay war cemetery and in Chania town. Heraklion and Rethymno also hold ceremonies.
