Lampini, in the Agios Vasileios area, has one of the finest Byzantine churches in Crete, dedicated to the Virgin and decorated with old frescoes. On 15 August people from all the surrounding villages come for the morning liturgy, and in the evening there is a glenti with a well-known lyra player.
It is about twenty minutes south of Rethymno on the road to Spili, so it combines well with a day on the south coast.
