Golden sand and sea cedars on Gavdos.
Agios Ioannis, often called Agiannis, is the best known beach of Gavdos, Europe's southernmost island. It takes its name from the little chapel of Saint John on the hill above. The beach is a wide stretch of fine golden sand, backed by dunes and scattered sea cedars (junipers) that give natural shade, and the water is shallow and very clear.
For decades Agios Ioannis has been loved by free campers and naturists, and it keeps a relaxed, alternative feel. There are no sunbeds, just a small canteen nearby in summer. You reach it on foot from the parking area or by a short walk from Sarakiniko.
Please respect the protected dunes and junipers, take your rubbish with you and don't light fires.
Sfakia is the proud mountain region of south Chania, famous for its fierce resistance to every occupier of Crete. The White Mountains drop straight into the Libyan Sea here, leaving only small villages like Chora Sfakion, Loutro and Agia Roumeli, some reachable only on foot or by boat. Famous gorges, including Samaria, Imbros and Aradena, cut through the mountains. Try the Sfakian pie, a thin pancake filled with soft cheese and drizzled with honey, in one of the harbour tavernas.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. Περισσότερα για Χανιά
