Minoan ruins under Chania's old town.
Kastelli hill rises above the old harbour of Chania and is the oldest part of the city. Here lay ancient Kydonia, one of the most important cities of Minoan and later Greek Crete.
Excavations have revealed Minoan houses, streets and finds such as clay tablets in Linear B. The Venetians and Byzantines also built walls here. You can see the excavations through fences in the Kanevaro street area.
The hill offers good views over the harbour.
Kydonia was one of the most important Minoan centres of western Crete, known from Linear B tablets at Knossos under the name Ku-do-ni-ja. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2025 as part of the Minoan palatial centres. The English word "quince" comes from the Greek name of the fruit, kydonia, named after the city.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. Περισσότερα για Χανιά
