Σχετικά

Hilltop ruins in eastern Crete.

Ancient Praisos lies near the village of Nea Praisos, south of Sitia. It was one of the last cities of the Eteocretans, the descendants of the Minoans, who kept their own language until Hellenistic times.

The site has an acropolis, houses and tombs. Inscriptions in the Eteocretan language were found here. Praisos was destroyed by Ierapytna in the 2nd century BC.

According to the ancient geographer Strabo, Praisos belonged to the Eteocretans and contained the temple of Dictaean Zeus. The site was inhabited from Neolithic times, and remains of Minoan and Mycenaean settlements have been found. The ruins are spread over three hills, among olive groves and wild flowers, and the setting is quiet and atmospheric. Finds are in the Sitia and Heraklion museums.

Sitia is the far east of Crete, a quieter, less touristy area of dry hills, olive groves and vineyards. The town of Sitia has a pretty harbour, a Venetian fortress and museums, and the area includes the palm beach of Vai, the Toplou monastery, the Minoan palace of Zakros and the Gorge of the Dead. Much of the area is part of the Sitia UNESCO Geopark. The local olive oil is among the best in Greece.

Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. Περισσότερα για Λασίθι
