An old monastery with frescoes in Myriokefala.

The monastery of Panagia Antifonitria lies in the village of Myriokefala, in the mountains south-west of Rethymno. It was founded in the 11th century by Saint John the Hermit.

The church has fine frescoes from the 11th and 12th centuries, some of the oldest in Crete.

Myriokefala is a mountain village in the west of Rethymno, near the border with Chania. The area is green and quiet, and the drive is beautiful.

Agios Vasileios is the south coast of Rethymno, a land of gorges, palm trees and beautiful beaches on the Libyan Sea. Plakias and Agia Galini are the main villages, and between them lie Preveli with its palm forest, Damnoni, Triopetra and Agios Pavlos with its sand dunes. Inland, Spili with its lion fountain and the Kourtaliotiko and Kotsifou gorges are worth a stop. The south coast is often calmer when the north wind blows, and the sea is warm well into autumn.
