An Ottoman fort by Ancient Aptera.
The Ottoman fortress of Aptera stands on a hill near ancient Aptera, with a breathtaking view of Souda bay. It was built in the 19th century to control the bay and protect against rebels.
The walls are strong, though some parts need restoration. It's a great spot for photos.
The Ottoman fortress at Aptera, called Koules, was built in 1866 or 1867, during the Cretan revolt, to control Souda bay and the surrounding area. It's close to the ruins of ancient Aptera, and the views over the bay, the islets and the White Mountains are spectacular. Come in the late afternoon for the best light.
Apokoronas lies between Chania and Rethymno, a green area of rolling hills, springs and traditional villages such as Vamos, Gavalochori, Vrisses and Kefalas. Many of the stone houses have been restored, and the villages keep a calm, local life. The coast along Souda bay and towards Georgioupoli has long beaches and the resorts of Kalyves and Almyrida, while inland Lake Kournas and the foothills of the White Mountains invite walks. Yoghurt with honey under the plane trees of Vrisses is a must.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. Περισσότερα για Χανιά
