The Byzantine and post-Byzantine collection of Chania is housed in the church of San Salvatore, at the western end of the old harbour.

The collection includes icons, frescoes, mosaics, coins, jewellery and pottery from the Byzantine and later periods. It's a small but interesting museum.

The church of San Salvatore, where the collection is housed, was built by the Venetians and later used as a mosque. It stands next to the Firkas fortress at the western end of the harbour. The collection is small but well presented, with icons from the Cretan school, frescoes, mosaics from early Christian churches, coins and jewellery.

The Chania area is the green heart of western Crete. Around the city, olive groves and orange orchards stretch towards the White Mountains, whose peaks stay snowy until late spring. The old town, with its Venetian harbour, the market hall and countless tavernas, is never far away, and the Akrotiri peninsula adds sandy beaches, old monasteries and the Venizelos graves. Food here is a highlight: try boureki (a bake of courgettes, potatoes and cheese), kalitsounia pies and fresh fish, with a glass of local raki to finish.
