Cedar forest and white sand off Ierapetra.
Chrissi is a small island about 15 km south of Ierapetra in the Libyan Sea. It's uninhabited and protected as a Natura 2000 area, famous for its forest of ancient juniper trees, some of them hundreds of years old, which grow right on the sand dunes.
The island has beautiful beaches with white sand and turquoise water, like Belegrina and Hatzivolakas, and one beach is covered with tiny shells. There are also fossils in the rocks.
Boats leave Ierapetra every morning in summer, and the trip takes about an hour. There's little shade and very few facilities, so bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Please don't take shells or sand.
Ierapetra is the southernmost town in Europe, and the area around it is known for its greenhouses, which produce vegetables for all of Greece. The coast stretches east to Makrigialos and west to Myrtos, with long beaches, small coves and a warm climate that allows swimming from April to November. Boats leave Ierapetra for Chrissi island, with its cedar forest and white sand. Inland, the Sarakina and Ha gorges and the Selakano forest offer cool escapes.

Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance.
