An underwater cave with elephant fossils.
The Elephant cave lies on Cape Drapano, east of Souda bay. It's an underwater cave, discovered in 1999 by local divers, and its entrance is about 10 m below the sea.
Inside, the cave has beautiful red and white stalactites and stalagmites. Fossilised bones of an extinct elephant species, larger than modern elephants, were found here, which gave the cave its name.
The cave can only be visited by experienced divers with a dive centre from Kalyves or Almyrida.
The cave is about 160 m long, with chambers full of formations in red and white. The fossilised remains belong to Elephas antiquus creutzburgi, an extinct species of elephant that was larger than modern elephants. Remains of deer were also found. Diving in the cave requires experience and must be done with a licensed dive centre.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. Περισσότερα για Χανιά
