The Kazarma fortress stands on a hill above the town of Sitia. It was built by the Venetians in the 13th century as part of the town walls. The name comes from casa di arma, Italian for "house of arms".
Today only part of the fortress remains, but it has been restored and hosts concerts and cultural events in summer. The view over Sitia and its bay is lovely.
The Venetians abandoned Sitia in 1651, during the Cretan War, and destroyed parts of the fortress so that the Ottomans couldn't use it. What remains today has been restored and is used as an open-air theatre in summer, during the Kornaria festival, named after Vitsentzos Kornaros, the Sitia-born poet of the Erotokritos. The fortress is a short walk up from the harbour.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. Περισσότερα για Λασίθι
