A small natural rock pool in Halepa, Chania, that looks like a turquoise swimming pool.

Kouloura is a little lagoon in the Halepa area, about 1 km east of the Tabakaria district. Rocks almost close it off from the sea, so the water is calm and turquoise like a pool. It is a local secret for a quick swim in town.

There are no facilities, but it's a short walk from the town. It's popular with locals for a quick swim, especially in the evening. The old tanneries of Tabakaria nearby make for an interesting walk.

The Chania area is the green heart of western Crete. Around the city, olive groves and orange orchards stretch towards the White Mountains, whose peaks stay snowy until late spring. The old town, with its Venetian harbour, the market hall and countless tavernas, is never far away, and the Akrotiri peninsula adds sandy beaches, old monasteries and the Venizelos graves. Food here is a highlight: try boureki (a bake of courgettes, potatoes and cheese), kalitsounia pies and fresh fish, with a glass of local raki to finish.
