A green high plain ringed by mountains.
The Lasithi plateau lies at about 850 m in the Dikti mountains, in the west of the Lasithi prefecture. It's a flat, fertile plain about 11 km long and 6 km wide, surrounded by mountains, with around 20 villages around its edge. The main village is Tzermiado.
The plateau was cultivated in Minoan times. The Venetians banned people from living here for two centuries, to stop rebels, but later encouraged farming and built drainage channels. In the 20th century, thousands of white-sailed windmills pumped water for irrigation, creating a famous sight. Most are now ruined, replaced by motor pumps, but some have been restored.
The plateau is known for potatoes, apples and other fruit. The Dikteon cave, where Zeus was said to be born, is above the village of Psychro. Drive the ring road around the plateau and stop for lunch in a village taverna.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. Περισσότερα για Λασίθι
