A chain of little coves between Cape Sarantari and Hersonissos, from busy to almost secret.

Limanakia means little harbours, and that is exactly what this stretch is: a row of small bays between Cape Sarantari and Hersonissos. Some are fully organised like Sarantari and Gefyri, others are tiny and quiet, and one is used by naturists. There is a small sea cave to explore and the snorkelling is excellent.

They are a good alternative to the busy resort beaches nearby, and exploring them one by one is part of the fun. Parking is along the old road. Bring water shoes, as the entry is rocky in places.

Hersonissos is the busiest resort area of Crete, stretching along the north coast east of Heraklion, with Gouves, Hersonissos, Stalida and Malia. The beaches are long and sandy, with every facility, and the nightlife is lively. Behind the resorts, villages like Koutouloufari, Piskopiano, Mochos and Krasi keep a traditional atmosphere and offer cooler evenings with views. The Minoan palace of Malia, the Cretaquarium and the open-air museum of Lychnostatis are all in the area.
