The beach settlement of Milatos has several small pebble beaches and fish tavernas.

Nearby, the Milatos cave has a tragic history: in 1823, during the Greek War of Independence, thousands of Cretans who had taken refuge there were killed by Ottoman troops.

The seaside part of Milatos is a small settlement with a harbour, fishing boats and a handful of fish tavernas. The coast is rocky with small pebble beaches, and the water is very clear. The village of Milatos, in the hills above, is traditional and quiet. The Milatos cave is about 3 km away.

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of Lasithi, built around a lake and a harbour on the beautiful Mirabello gulf. The area includes Elounda, Plaka and the island of Spinalonga to the north, and Kritsa, Lato and the Katharo plateau in the hills behind. The coast has many small beaches and calm bays, and the town is lively in the evening with cafes and restaurants around the lake. Boats leave for Spinalonga and trips around the bay.

Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance.
