Σχετικά

An early Minoan settlement.

The Minoan town of Vasiliki lies near Pachia Ammos, in eastern Crete. It was built in the early Minoan period and is famous for its mottled pottery, called Vasiliki ware.

Vasiliki lies on a small hill at the northern end of the Ierapetra isthmus, about 2 km from the Mirabello bay. It was first excavated by the American archaeologist R. B. Seager in 1903 to 1906, and later by Greek archaeologists. The site gave its name to a style of early Minoan pottery with a mottled red and black surface, made by uneven firing. The so-called "House on the Hill" is one of the earliest large Minoan buildings.

Ierapetra is the southernmost town in Europe, and the area around it is known for its greenhouses, which produce vegetables for all of Greece. The coast stretches east to Makrigialos and west to Myrtos, with long beaches, small coves and a warm climate that allows swimming from April to November. Boats leave Ierapetra for Chrissi island, with its cedar forest and white sand. Inland, the Sarakina and Ha gorges and the Selakano forest offer cool escapes.

Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. Περισσότερα για Λασίθι
