Panagia Kaliviani Monastery

Φαιστός, Ηράκλειο

Σχετικά

A peaceful convent near Moires.

The convent of Panagia Kaliviani lies near the town of Moires, in the west of the Messara plain. According to tradition, a small chapel stood here long before the convent was founded, built over the spot where an icon of the Virgin Mary was found. The present convent was developed in the 20th century and is very active today.

The nuns run a school, an orphanage and a care home, and they make embroidery, icons and other handicrafts which you can buy. The large modern church is richly decorated, and the gardens are calm and green.

It's an easy stop on the way to Phaistos or Matala.

Phaistos covers the western Messara, the largest plain of Crete, and its coast on the Libyan Sea. Here lie some of the most important Minoan sites, Phaistos and Agia Triada, and the beaches of Matala, Kommos, Kalamaki and the long Messara bay. Inland, towns like Moires and Tymbaki are busy farming centres, while villages such as Zaros, Vori and Kamilari are perfect for a slower pace. The area is warm and sunny, with a long swimming season.

Γύρω από Φαιστός

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
