The Public Garden of Rethymno is a green park in the centre of the city, near the old town. It was created in the 1920s on the site of an old Ottoman cemetery.

The garden has tall trees, a small zoo with Cretan wild goats, a playground and a cafe. In July it hosts the Rethymno wine festival, with music and local wines.

The garden is a peaceful place in the centre of the busy town, with tall pine and palm trees and shady paths. It's the main venue of the Rethymno wine festival every July, when local wineries offer tastings and there's live Cretan music. In other months, it's a nice place for a break, especially with children.

The area around Rethymno town mixes a lively Venetian old town with a long sandy coast and quiet villages in the hills. To the east, the beach runs for kilometres past Platanes and Adelianos Kampos, where loggerhead turtles nest in summer. Inland, villages such as Chromonastiri, Myloi, Atsipopoulo and Maroulas have old Venetian houses and tavernas with views. The Arkadi monastery and ancient Eleftherna are less than half an hour away. Try the local snails, staka with eggs and the town's famous pastries.
