A shady gorge with a 20 m waterfall.

The Richtis gorge lies near the village of Exo Mouliana, between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. It's one of the most beautiful gorges in eastern Crete, green and shady all year round thanks to the stream that runs through it.

The walk starts at an old stone bridge near Lapithos and takes about 2 hours to reach the sea. Halfway down, the path passes a 20 m high waterfall that falls into a pool, perfect for a cool dip in summer. Plane trees, oleanders and ferns line the path, which crosses the stream several times.

The gorge ends at Richtis beach, a pebble beach with clear water and a small chapel. There are no facilities, so bring water and snacks, and arrange transport back or walk back up the same way.
