Sfakia (Chora Sfakion)
Proud mountain people and boats to Loutro.
Χωριά & Πόλεις · Σφακιά
The main pebble beach of Chora Sfakion, where the boats from Samaria come in.
Vrysi is the largest beach at Chora Sfakion, a short walk from the harbour. Grey sand and fine pebbles, clear blue water and a wild rocky backdrop. Handy for a swim while waiting for the ferry along the south coast.
Chora Sfakion is the main village of Sfakia, a proud mountain region known for its fierce resistance against every occupier of Crete. In 1941, thousands of Allied soldiers were evacuated from this beach to Egypt after the Battle of Crete, and a memorial near the harbour remembers them.
Today the village is the end point for many hikers coming out of the Samaria and Imbros gorges, and the port for ferries to Loutro, Agia Roumeli and Gavdos. Vrysi beach is a short walk from the harbour, with fine pebbles and clear water. Try the local Sfakian pies with honey in one of the waterfront tavernas.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. Περισσότερα για Χανιά
