Sandy beach backed by Europe’s largest natural forest of Cretan date palms.
Vai is a sandy beach in the far north-east of Crete, backed by the largest natural palm forest in Europe. The trees are Phoenix theophrasti, a palm that only grows on Crete and a few spots in Turkey. Legend has it that the forest grew from date stones left behind by Arab sailors or Roman soldiers, but the palm actually has a very long natural history here.
The beach is organised, with sunbeds, a taverna and a parking fee, and in summer it gets busy with day trippers. The sea is calm and shallow on most days, good for families. For a quieter swim, climb the path over the rocks to the right, where small coves and a viewpoint over the bay are waiting.
The forest is protected and you can't walk freely among the palms, but you'll see them from the beach and the road. Combine your visit with the Toplou monastery on the way from Sitia, or with the ancient site and beaches of Itanos a few kilometres further north.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. Περισσότερα για Λασίθι
