Agia Varvara

Gortyna, Heraklion

About

Mountain village near the geographical centre of Crete.

Agia Varvara sits at about 600 m on the road from Heraklion to the Messara plain. On a rock at the edge of the village stands the chapel of Profitis Ilias, which locals call the "navel" of Crete because it is close to the centre of the island.

Around Gortyna

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
