About

Finds from eastern Crete.

The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos was established in 1970 and reopened after renovation. It houses finds from excavations in eastern Crete, from the Neolithic to the Roman period.

Highlights include the Goddess of Myrtos, a clay jug in the shape of a woman holding a jug, from around 2500 BC, as well as Minoan pottery, jewellery and a Roman skull with a gold wreath and a coin in its mouth.

The museum reopened in 2024 after a long renovation, with a modern display. The first room shows finds from the early Minoan cemetery of Agia Fotia near Sitia, including vases, hundreds of bronze blades and early fish hooks. Other rooms display finds from Mochlos, Malia, Myrtos, Lato and other sites of eastern Crete. It's a good introduction before visiting the sites of the area, and it's a short walk from the lake.

Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. More about Lasithi
