About

A pretty bay of white sand and pebbles below the village where El Greco was born.

Fodele beach has white sand and small pebbles and very clear turquoise water. The western side has sunbeds and a couple of tavernas, the eastern side stays wild and quiet. Up the valley the village of Fodele, surrounded by orange groves, is said to be the birthplace of the painter El Greco.

The village of Fodele lies a few kilometres inland in a green valley full of orange trees, and it is said to be the birthplace of the painter El Greco. There's a small El Greco museum and a lovely Byzantine church of the Panagia in the valley, so it's worth combining the beach with a visit inland.

The beach itself is a pretty bay with white sand and pebbles and very clear water. The western part has sunbeds and tavernas, while the eastern side is quieter. On windy days from the north, waves can roll in, but on calm days the colours of the water are wonderful. It's about 25 km from Heraklion along the national road.

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
