About

A Venetian gate on Eleftherias Square.

The Gate of Saint George is one of the gates in the Venetian walls of Heraklion, on Eleftherias square. It was built in the 16th century and consists of an arched entrance and a long vaulted passage.

Today the passage is used for exhibitions. The gate is one of the best preserved parts of the walls.

The gate was part of the eastern defences of the Venetian walls and led towards the road to the east of the island. The long vaulted gallery behind it was used to store supplies and move troops. Today it's an exhibition space, and the cool passage is a welcome break from the heat in summer. Eleftherias square in front of the gate is one of the main squares of Heraklion, with cafes and the Archaeological Museum nearby.
