Kato Zakros lies where the Gorge of the Dead reaches the sea, right next to the Minoan palace of Zakros. The palace was discovered in 1961 almost untouched and was the fourth largest Minoan palace on Crete. Its harbour was an important trading port with Egypt and the East.
The beach is pebbly with clear water, and a few tavernas and rooms line the shore. The walk through the Gorge of the Dead from Ano Zakros takes about two hours and is one of the most rewarding hikes in eastern Crete. Staying a night here is a peaceful experience.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. More about Lasithi
