Azoria
Archaic Greek city on a hill above Kavousi.
Ausgrabungsstätten · Ierapetra
Village at the foot of the Thripti mountains, east of Pachia Ammos.
Kavousi lies where the Havgas gorge opens towards the sea. Above it are the Archaic city of Azoria and the Thripti mountains, and an ancient olive tree near the village is said to be over 3,000 years old.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. More about Lasithi
