A car-free village reached by boat.
Loutro is a small village on the south coast of Sfakia, which can only be reached by boat or on foot. Its white houses with blue shutters curve around a small bay, and there are no cars.
The village is very peaceful, with tavernas, rooms and a few shops. In ancient times it was the port of Anopolis. From Loutro, paths lead along the coast to Finikas, Marmara, Glyka Nera and Chora Sfakion.
Staying a few nights in Loutro is a wonderful way to slow down.
Loutro got its name from the Greek word for bath, after the ancient baths found in the area. It was the port of ancient Anopolis and an important harbour in Hellenistic and Roman times, called Phoenix. Later it became the winter port of Sfakia because its bay is protected from storms. Today it's one of the most charming places on the south coast.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. More about Chania
About 7 km from Chora Sfakion by road.
