About

A narrow, sheltered sandy cove with calm warm water and green hills around it.

Lygaria is a small bay between Agia Pelagia and Heraklion, protected from the north wind by the hills, so the sea is usually flat and warm. The beach has coarse sand, sunbeds, a few tavernas, cafes and a diving centre. It is easy going and great with kids.

Lygaria lies in a small, deep bay about 15 km west of Heraklion, surrounded by green hills and olive trees. Because it is so well protected, the water is usually like a lake, which makes it a great choice for families with small children and for anyone who simply wants to float in calm, warm sea.

The beach has sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, a couple of good tavernas and a dive centre. A ramp makes it accessible for wheelchairs too. The rocks on both sides of the bay are nice for snorkelling. It can fill up in August, especially at weekends, so arrive in the morning to find parking. In the evening the low sun lights up the bay beautifully.

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
