Margarites is a village about 27 km east of Rethymno, known as the pottery village of Crete. Potters have worked here for centuries, and today several workshops are open to visitors, where you can watch them work and buy their pottery.
The village has narrow lanes, old houses, Byzantine churches and a nice square with tavernas. It's a lovely stop on the way to Arkadi and ancient Eleftherna.
Margarites lies at about 400 m, with views over the hills towards the sea. The village has a long tradition of pottery, making large jars (pithoi) and everyday pots. Today there are several workshops where you can watch potters at work and buy their creations. The village square, with its cafes under the trees, is a lovely place to rest.
Rethymno sits between the mountains and two seas, and it is the easiest region to combine with the rest of the island. Its old town and Fortezza are among the best preserved on Crete, with Venetian doorways, Ottoman wooden balconies and a long sandy beach right next to the centre. More about Rethymno
