An abandoned mill village in a gorge.
Myloi is an abandoned village in the Myloi gorge, south of Rethymno. It was named after its water mills, and the ruins of the mills and houses can be seen along the path. A taverna stands at the top of the gorge.
The Myloi gorge lies about 6 km south of Rethymno. The old water mills, houses and churches remain among the plane trees. A path follows the stream down through the gorge, and at the top there's a taverna with a view.
Myloi refers both to a village built in the early 1970s and to two deserted small villages in the Myloi gorge, which got their name from the many water mills that once worked here. The gorge has abundant vegetation, and the walk through it, past the ruins of the mills, is beautiful.
Rethymno sits between the mountains and two seas, and it is the easiest region to combine with the rest of the island. Its old town and Fortezza are among the best preserved on Crete, with Venetian doorways, Ottoman wooden balconies and a long sandy beach right next to the centre. More about Rethymno
