About

The eastern end of the long Karteros beach, close to town with beach bars and soft sand.

Tobrouk is really the last part of the long beach east of Heraklion airport. The sand is soft and golden, the water clear, and you find sunbeds, showers and a few beach bars and tavernas. Keep walking east and the beach becomes unorganised and much quieter.

Tobrouk is one of the easiest beaches to reach from Heraklion, just a few minutes east of the airport. The name is said to come from the Second World War, when Allied soldiers who had fought at Tobruk in North Africa were stationed here. Today it's a local favourite for an afternoon swim after work.

The beach has soft sand, clear water and a few beach bars with sunbeds and music. Planes fly in low over the sea, which can be fun for kids and plane spotters. It's a convenient stop on your first or last day in Crete, when you have a few hours to spare near the airport. Combine it with the Minoan site of Amnissos just to the east.

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
