A 4 km gorge to a secluded beach.
The Trypitis gorge winds from the Vasiliki area to a secluded beach on the Libyan Sea. It's about 4 km long.
Along the way you pass the church of Panagia Trypiti and the ancient olive tree of Agios Savvas.
Gortyna lies in the heart of the Messara, around the ruins of ancient Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete. Agioi Deka is the main village, and the area stretches south to the Asterousia mountains and the remote coast of Lentas and Kali Limenes. The landscape is a mix of olive groves, small villages and wild mountains. The south coast here is one of the warmest and driest places in Crete, with quiet beaches and tavernas serving fresh fish.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
