About

Carvings in Zoniana.

The Wooden Sculptures Museum lies in the village of Zoniana, near the Sfendoni cave. It displays more than 100 sculptures carved by a local artist, inspired by Cretan folklore, mythology and nature.

The museum is the work of one artist, who carved scenes from Cretan folklore, mythology and nature in wood. The sculptures are detailed and full of life, showing farmers, musicians, shepherds and mythological figures. It's a small museum, easy to combine with the Sfendoni cave and the wax museum in the same village.

Zoniana is a mountain village near Anogia, on the slopes of Psiloritis, with about 1,200 inhabitants. Besides the wooden sculptures museum, the village has the Sfendoni cave and a wax museum, making it a good destination for a day trip from Rethymno or Heraklion.

Around Anogia

  • Nearest airport: Heraklion airport (HER), about 40 km by road

Rethymno sits between the mountains and two seas, and it is the easiest region to combine with the rest of the island. Its old town and Fortezza are among the best preserved on Crete, with Venetian doorways, Ottoman wooden balconies and a long sandy beach right next to the centre. More about Rethymno
