Σχετικά

The lighthouse at the end of the Venetian harbour.

The lighthouse at the end of the Venetian harbour of Rethymno was built in the 1830s, when Crete was under Egyptian rule. It replaced an older Venetian lighthouse and is the second oldest lighthouse in Crete, after the one in Chania.

The stone tower is about 9 m high. You can walk along the harbour wall to reach it, with lovely views of the old town, the Fortezza and the little harbour full of fishing boats and seafood tavernas.

The harbour of Rethymno was always difficult to keep open because of sand carried by the currents, and it was dredged many times. Today it's full of fishing boats and small yachts, and the quay is lined with seafood tavernas. The walk out to the lighthouse is short and gives beautiful views of the old town and the Fortezza, especially at sunset.
