Ottoman Baths of Rethymno

Σχετικά

A hammam in the old town.

The Ottoman baths, or hammam, of Rethymno are located in the old town, on Radamanthyos street. They date from the Ottoman period and have several domes.

The baths date from the Ottoman period, when Rethymno had a large Muslim population. Hammams were important places for washing and socialising. The building, with its domes and small glass windows, is a reminder of the town's mixed history. It's in the old town, close to the Fortezza.

Rethymno had several public baths during the Ottoman period, and this is one of the best preserved. Its domes, pierced with small glass windows, let light into the bathing rooms. The building is in the old town, a short walk from the Fortezza and the Rimondi fountain.

The area around Rethymno town mixes a lively Venetian old town with a long sandy coast and quiet villages in the hills. To the east, the beach runs for kilometres past Platanes and Adelianos Kampos, where loggerhead turtles nest in summer. Inland, villages such as Chromonastiri, Myloi, Atsipopoulo and Maroulas have old Venetian houses and tavernas with views. The Arkadi monastery and ancient Eleftherna are less than half an hour away. Try the local snails, staka with eggs and the town's famous pastries.

Rethymno sits between the mountains and two seas, and it is the easiest region to combine with the rest of the island.
