Massive late-16th-century Venetian fortress crowning Rethymno’s old town.
The Fortezza is the Venetian fortress that crowns the Paleokastro hill above the old town of Rethymno. It was built between 1573 and 1580 after pirate raids, and with its long walls and bastions it is one of the largest Venetian castles ever built. Inside the walls there was once a small town with houses, barracks, warehouses and a cathedral.
Today much of the interior is open space, but the highlights are the domed mosque of Sultan Ibrahim, the church of Agia Ekaterini, the powder stores and the walk along the ramparts. The views over the old town, the harbour and the long beach to the east are wonderful, especially in the late afternoon.
In summer, concerts and plays are held in the open-air theatre inside the fortress. Plan an hour or so, then walk down into the old town, with its Venetian loggia, the Rimondi fountain and the little harbour with its lighthouse.
Rethymno sits between the mountains and two seas, and it is the easiest region to combine with the rest of the island. Its old town and Fortezza are among the best preserved on Crete, with Venetian doorways, Ottoman wooden balconies and a long sandy beach right next to the centre. Περισσότερα για Ρέθυμνο
