An easier alternative to Samaria.
Imbros gorge lies in Sfakia, in the south of Chania, and is one of the most popular hikes in Crete after Samaria. It is about 8 km long and runs from the village of Imbros, at around 780 m, down to Komitades near the south coast.
The walk takes 2 to 3 hours and is downhill all the way, on a fairly easy path through the river bed. The gorge narrows to only about 2 m in places, with walls rising up to 300 m, and there's a natural rock arch along the way. Cypress, oak and plane trees give shade.
In 1941 thousands of Allied soldiers retreated through this gorge to Chora Sfakion to be evacuated. Today taxis wait at Komitades to take hikers back up to Imbros. Combine the walk with a swim at Chora Sfakion or Frangokastello.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. Περισσότερα για Χανιά
