A small beach of pebbles and sand with big rocks in the water, west of Rethymno.

Kamari (also Gerani) is a little beach with pebbles, sand and big rocks offshore. A few sunbeds, good snorkelling and some tavernas nearby.

Kamari, also called Gerani, lies a few kilometres west of Rethymno near the mouth of the Gerani gorge. Big rocks stand in the shallow water and break the waves, so snorkelling around them is fun, especially for kids.

There are a few sunbeds and tavernas nearby. Just inland, the Gerani cave was used in Neolithic times and contained bones of dwarf deer, though it isn't open to visitors. The beach is a good alternative to the busy town beach of Rethymno.

The area around Rethymno town mixes a lively Venetian old town with a long sandy coast and quiet villages in the hills. To the east, the beach runs for kilometres past Platanes and Adelianos Kampos, where loggerhead turtles nest in summer. Inland, villages such as Chromonastiri, Myloi, Atsipopoulo and Maroulas have old Venetian houses and tavernas with views. The Arkadi monastery and ancient Eleftherna are less than half an hour away. Try the local snails, staka with eggs and the town's famous pastries.
