A pebble beach below a monastery in the Asterousia.

Koudoumas beach lies on the remote south coast of the Asterousia mountains, at the foot of Mount Kofinas. It's a secluded beach of pebbles with deep blue water, surrounded by caves along the rugged coastline.

Above the beach stands the monastery of Koudoumas, which welcomes visitors. Reaching the beach involves a long drive on dirt roads or a walk along the Agios Ioannis trail. The landscape is wild, with pine forests and steep cliffs.

Archanes-Asterousia stretches from the wine villages south of Heraklion, like Archanes and Peza, down to the wild Asterousia mountains and the Libyan Sea. Mount Giouchtas, which looks like the profile of Zeus, rises above Archanes, and the area is rich in Minoan sites. Further south, the Asterousia hide monasteries, gorges and remote beaches such as Treis Ekklisies and Tsoutsouros. The wineries of the Peza area are open for tastings.
