A small, wild pebble beach east of Frangokastello with dark blue water.

Koutelos is a tiny secluded beach with grey pebbles and very clear, deep blue water. No sunbeds or facilities, just rocks and sea.

It's a beautiful place for a quiet swim and snorkelling. The landscape around is wild and empty, typical of the Sfakia coast.

Koutelos lies on the coast road between Frangokastello and Skaloti, below the village of Kapsodasos. You park by the road and walk down a short path. The sea here gets deep quickly, and on calm days the water is incredibly clear, ideal for snorkelling. Combine it with lunch in Frangokastello or a visit to the castle.

Sfakia is the proud mountain region of south Chania, famous for its fierce resistance to every occupier of Crete. The White Mountains drop straight into the Libyan Sea here, leaving only small villages like Chora Sfakion, Loutro and Agia Roumeli, some reachable only on foot or by boat. Famous gorges, including Samaria, Imbros and Aradena, cut through the mountains. Try the Sfakian pie, a thin pancake filled with soft cheese and drizzled with honey, in one of the harbour tavernas.
