Σχετικά

Commonwealth war graves by the sea.

The Souda Bay War Cemetery lies on the shore of Souda bay, between Chania and the airport. It's maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and holds the graves of more than 1,500 soldiers from Britain, Australia, New Zealand and other countries who died in the Battle of Crete in 1941 and during the occupation.

The cemetery is beautifully kept, with rows of white headstones and flowers, and a peaceful view over the bay.

The cemetery was designed by the architect Louis de Soissons and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It holds over 1,500 graves, about half of them unidentified. Among those buried here is John Pendlebury, the British archaeologist who worked at Knossos and was killed in 1941 while organising Cretan resistance. The cemetery is open every day.

Γύρω από Χανιά

The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. Περισσότερα για Χανιά
