Crete has three airports with scheduled flights. Which one you choose can save you hours of driving, so it is worth a minute of thought.
Heraklion (HER)
The Nikos Kazantzakis airport in Heraklion is the main gateway, right on the north coast next to the city. Most international and charter flights land here. It is busy in summer, so leave enough time at check-in and security. It is the best choice for Heraklion, Hersonissos, Malia, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the whole east.
A brand new airport is being built near Kastelli, around 35 km south east of Heraklion, and will replace the current one once it opens.
Chania (CHQ)
The Ioannis Daskalogiannis airport sits on the Akrotiri peninsula, around 15 km from Chania town. It is smaller and usually more relaxed. Fly here for Chania, Platanias, Kissamos, Balos, Elafonisi and the south west.
Sitia (JSH)
A small airport in the far east with mostly domestic flights. Handy if you are staying near Sitia or Vai.
Getting from the airport
Taxis wait outside both main airports, and you can pre-book a transfer with a fixed price. Car rental desks are in or next to the arrivals halls, and KTEL buses connect both airports with the city centres.
