Crete has been an island for millions of years, so a lot of life here developed on its own. Around one in ten plant species on the island grows nowhere else in the world.
Plants and herbs
In spring the hills are full of wild flowers and orchids. Thyme, sage, oregano and the famous dittany (diktamo) grow wild, and you will find them in teas and in the kitchen. The palm forests of Vai and Preveli are some of the very few natural palm groves in Europe.
Animals
The symbol of Crete is the kri-kri, a wild goat with big curved horns that lives in the Samaria gorge and on a few islets. In the mountains look up for griffon vultures and, if you are lucky, the rare bearded vulture. The sea has turtles, dolphins and the occasional monk seal.
Protected areas
The Samaria gorge is a national park, and many places such as Balos, Elafonisi and the palm forests are part of the Natura 2000 network. Stay on the paths, do not take sand or plants, and take your rubbish with you.
