Two villages near Rethymno end the carnival with old Lenten customs, satire and lagana bread.
The date changes from year to year. Local cultural associations announce it a few weeks ahead, so please check before you go.
The Rethymno carnival does not stop with the parade. On Clean Monday, the first day of Lent, the villages of Gerani on the coast road and Armenoi on the road to Spili act out the old customs of the day: mock weddings, satirical sketches about local life and the 'koudounatoi', men dressed in bells and goat skins.
Around the square there is lagana, the flat sesame bread baked only on this day, with olives, taramas, beans and wine for everyone, and lyra players keep the dancing going into the afternoon.
