Dermatos Beach

Minoa Pediadas, Heraklion ·South coast

About

A long, empty beach at the mouth of the Anapodaris river, far off the beaten track.

Dermatos lies at the mouth of the Anapodaris, one of the longest rivers on Crete, between Tsoutsouros and Keratokambos. The villages around are tiny and there are no facilities at all, just sand, sea and a lot of space. It is the kind of place where you might not see another person all day.

Dermatos is one of the most remote beaches on the south coast of Heraklion. The Anapodaris river, which drains a large part of the inland plateau, reaches the sea here, and in winter its mouth creates a small wetland where birds rest.

There's nothing at the beach, so it's for people who like empty spaces and don't mind bringing their own water and shade. Access is by small roads from Tsoutsouros or Keratokambos. The nearby villages have a couple of simple tavernas where you can eat fresh fish after your swim.

Around Minoa Pediadas

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
