About

A quiet beach just west of Lentas with tamarisks, a few tavernas and great sunsets.

Gerokampos is a peaceful beach about 500 metres from Lentas, framed by big rocks and tamarisk trees. The sand is soft with fine pebbles and the water a bright cyan. The eastern side has a few sunbeds, the western side stays wild. There are some tavernas and rooms nearby.

A few tavernas and rooms make it an easy place to spend a day or several. Because it faces south-west, the sunsets here are beautiful. Lentas, with its ancient Asklepion and lion-shaped headland, is a short walk away.

Gortyna lies in the heart of the Messara, around the ruins of ancient Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete. Agioi Deka is the main village, and the area stretches south to the Asterousia mountains and the remote coast of Lentas and Kali Limenes. The landscape is a mix of olive groves, small villages and wild mountains. The south coast here is one of the warmest and driest places in Crete, with quiet beaches and tavernas serving fresh fish.

Around Gortyna

  • South coast, on the Libyan Sea
  • Nearest town: Lentas, about 3 km by road
  • Nearest airport: Heraklion airport (HER), about 68 km by road

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
