Church where El Greco may have studied.
The church of Agia Ekaterini stands on Agia Ekaterini square in the centre of Heraklion, next to the cathedral of Agios Minas. It was built in the 16th century as a dependency of the monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai in Egypt. During the Cretan Renaissance it housed an important school where theology, philosophy and icon painting were taught, and some believe El Greco studied here.
Today the church is a museum of religious art, with icons, frescoes and wood carvings. The highlight is a group of six icons by Michael Damaskinos, one of the great painters of the Cretan school in the 16th century, who combined Byzantine tradition with Italian influences.
It's a small but rewarding museum, and the square outside, with the huge cathedral and the little old church of Agios Minas, is one of the most beautiful in Heraklion.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
